Roanoke Field Hockey had quite an impressive game this past Saturday, November 2nd. This show stopping game was made even more special as this was the last home match for the Maroons, and therefore the team got to celebrate ten special seniors. Four of the seven goals in the match were scored by seniors, including a first goal for defensive player Peyton Bradford. Sophomore Ashley Mountcastle also scored the first goal of her career against Eastern Mennonite on Saturday. These are quite impressive stats for the Maroons, but these were not the only firsts that day. Krista DeModna had her first multi-assist game of her career, helping the Maroons take the lead early in the first quarter. Another first would be Sophia van Holst’s assist to Bradford in the third quarter. Senior Grace Vernarelli had four shots on goal, one of which added to Roanoke’s impressive score. Also scoring in the game were Junior Carsyn Poppa and Freshman Maggie Beach. Roanoke seemed to have a particular advantage being at home and celebrating Senior Night.
Everybody on the Roanoke roster had playing time, including both goal keepers Madison Wingerter and Megan Keller. The Royals from Eastern Mennonite had no shots on goal which made it quite easy for the two goalkeepers. This sweet victory for RC was needed to push the Maroons to take the sixth seed in the ODAC tournament. The Maroons will be away facing the Bridgewater Eagles on Tuesday, November 5th. The Maroons fell to the Eagles early in the season, but the match was close with Bridgewater only scoring two points on Roanoke. This next game ought to be competitive, especially after this past match for RC. Roanoke needs to rally big here, and we wish the girls the best of luck in their upcoming game!
