Polling Maroons: Snowstorm Preferences

Snow has taken over campus this past weekend, and with classes cancelled the majority of the week, students have had the opportunity to either cozy up in their warm dorms or face the treacherous freezing temperatures. Snow angels and snowmen litter the grounds, and there’s one question building up among students: Do you prefer cold weather with or without snow?

The voting data was gathered from two groups: one through a personalized poll where students could be directly contacted for more commentary, and the other via anonymous voting on YikYak.

It seems like students much prefer snow in cold weather, with snow taking a winning total of 279 votes (255 anonymous and 24 personal). Sledding and snowball fights are a huge hit at Roanoke College, with the evidence being clear across campus.

“It just doesn’t feel like winter without snow. Why would it be cold if there is no snow?” said an anonymous student.

Cold weather took a mere second place in the voting with a total of 111 votes (104 anonymous and 7 personal). Many students quote the lack of transportation options and feel stuck in their rooms.

“It’s hard to get around campus and parts of Salem with snow around. The south doesn’t know how to properly prepare and take care of snow when it hits the ground,” said an anonymous student.

Whether you prefer playing in the snow or bearing the cold without the added hassle, it’s clear that Roanoke College students much prefer quality time in the snow. Leaving the cold weather as an unfortunate side-effect of the snow. With more snow coming this weekend, how will you spend your time in the cold weather?
