Roanoke College students have officially flooded the hallowed halls of campus as
we jump into the start of the semester. Some old faces, some new ones, and many looking ahead to the future of their education here at the college. To get a sense of students’ aspirations, a recent poll asked them to share their dream study abroad destinations from a compact list that included London, Korea, Barcelona, and Hawaii. The data was gathered from two groups: one via anonymous voting on YikYak, and another through a more personalized poll, where students could be directly contacted for additional commentary.
It’s no surprise, given our largely English-language-based school, that London took
first place with a combined total of 131 votes, with 114 from YikYak and 17 from the more
personalized poll. With its beautiful city skyline, top-rated academics, and excellent public
transportation options, it’s no wonder London would take the cake in this competition.
In a close second was Hawaii, with a total of 116 votes, including 111 from YikYak
and 5 from the personal poll. One freshman who insisted on remaining anonymous, said,
“Hawaii would be so much easier to travel to because it’s still a US state. It’s hard to get a
passport for things outside of the country. Also, the environment of Hawaii is so unique
that it would be such a perfect fit for biology majors like me.”
Not far off the pace was the third choice, Barcelona, which racked up a total of 99 votes,
including 90 from YikYak and 9 from the personal poll. Known for its vibrant cultural
atmosphere and thriving creative scene, the city offers an inspiring environment filled with art, festivals, and traditions that encourage exploration and personal growth, making its study abroad program especially enticing to students.
Bringing up the rear was the final choice Korea, which gained a total of 74 votes, including
68 from YikYak and 6 from the personal poll. A group of Roanoke College students is
currently studying at this breathtaking destination, and they are loving the experience so
far. Korea offers a unique experience through its traditional practices blended with its
cutting-edge technology of the 21st century.
