We’re in the lull between holidays. After the bustling excitement of Halloweekend, the days feel a little drearier than usual. To brighten things up, a recent poll asked students to share their favorite ways to cure their boredom when technology isn’t an option. The poll included four classic choices: books, puzzles, crafts, and board games.
The voting data was gathered from two groups: one through a personalized poll where students could be directly contacted for more commentary, and the other via anonymous voting on YikYak.
Topping the charts this week was books, which received a total of 62 votes (54 anonymous and 8 personal). Books are a truly timeless and dependable choice for curing boredom. Their travel-ready form makes it easy to slip into a bag, which explains why so many students find themselves turning to them during slower days.
Coming in a not-so-close second came crafts, which received a total of 49 votes (43 anonymous and 6 personal). From crocheting to painting, students showed that a little creativity is all they need to fight their boredom. Crafts offer a hands-on escape that lets many channel their energy into something interesting and entirely their own.
In a solid third place came board games, which received a total of 32 votes (30 anonymous and 2 personal). A little competition is just what some students need in times of boredom. Whether played with a group of friends or tackled solo, many are drawn to board games for their challenge and the fun of testing their strategy and luck.
Finally, in a measly last place came puzzles, which received a total of 26 votes (25 anonymous and 1 personal). For being one of the calmer options, it is a shame it ranked as low as it did. Still, puzzles offer a quiet yet satisfying way to pass the time. One anonymous student said, “Finishing a puzzle gives me the motivation to finish my homework.”
