Home Folks at Noke Polling Maroons: Sweet or Savory?

Polling Maroons: Sweet or Savory?

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and there are only two things on everyone’s minds: going home and eating food. To keep up the excitement for the many dishes Maroons will be indulging in this coming week, a recent poll asked students to share which type of breakfast food they find most satisfying in the morning: sweet or savory.

The voting data was gathered from two groups: one through a personalized poll where students could be directly contacted for more commentary, and the other via anonymous voting on YikYak.

Savory came out on top this week with a total of 177 votes (154 anonymous and 23 personal). For most students, savory breakfasts feel more practical and filling, with many mentioning options like bacon, biscuits, and scrambled eggs. These salty, protein-rich foods help students stay energized through their morning classes.

“I prefer savory since they feel more fulfilling and have fewer carbs,” said Rina Rogers ’27. “I am a Type 1 diabetic, so it’s easier to manage my sugars and deal with insulin resistance in the morning with savory foods compared with sweets.”

Unfortunately, that means sweet came in last with a total of 50 votes (42 anonymous and 8 personal). From syrup-covered waffles to chocolate hazelnut croissants, sweet breakfasts bring a sense of fun that help brighten the morning. These sugary options also provide a quick burst of energy to start the day.

“I love yogurt with berries and vanilla coffee,” said Grayson Boone ‘27. “Sweets are how I harness my power and strength to handle the day.”

Savory may have taken the lead in this week’s poll, but it’s clear that both savory and sweet have their place at the table. As Maroons head home, they’ll find that the most satisfying meals are the ones shared together.
