Thanksgiving approaches as a road marker for the upcoming end of the semester. Hopefully, Roanoke maroons across campus have had a fulfilling semester. Though, I’m sure everyone is ready for Thanksgiving, or just a small breather before they face off against finals. Let’s check in and see how some new maroons have enjoyed their semester, and their takes on the often-overlooked holiday of Thanksgiving.
As we close in on Thanksgiving, and finals are just ahead of us, which of your classes have you enjoyed the most? What class do you feel you’ve learned the most from?
“My favorite class has been my “Retold: Stories from the World” class because of the deep discussions that we get into. I love how my classmates genuinely ask deep, thought-provoking questions, and I love listening to Dr. Hawke yap. I also like playing Connections and Wordle during class and beating Noah Kuhn and Ruben Krishna.” -Sadie Teer (Class of ‘29)
What is your favorite food for Thanksgiving?
“I, Kenneth Jai Spicer, am a big fan of my Nani’s Aloo Gobi. As a biracial individual, Thanksgiving is a time where both sides of my family come together and share recipes and savor delicious grub. It may be unconventional, but it’s warm and homey and I love it. Amen.” – Jai Spicer (Class of ‘29)
Christmas tends to get all the love in the cinematic world. What do you think is the definitive Thanksgiving movie?
“I believe “a Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving” is the best Thanksgiving movie because anyone can watch it. I have been watching it every Thanksgiving with my family and cousins since I gained consciousness.” – Noah Kuhn (Class of ‘29)
To give props to a cult classic of sorts, Iliana Martinez, a fellow maroon (and myself) claims that Free Birds would be the definitive Thanksgiving movie. Perhaps it’s time for Thanksgiving to be given a chance in cinema!
