Polling Maroons: Christmas Light Fiasco

Winter break is arriving quickly, and before we know it, Christmas will have come and gone. During the time between now and then, you will see many shining lights; but which ones are the best? A recent poll asked students to choose which type of Christmas lights best fit the holiday aesthetic: incandescent or LED?

Winning by a landslide, incandescent lights came out on top this week with a total of 134 votes (117 anonymous and 17 personal). Many students mentioned that warm, incandescent Christmas lights are not just decorations, but they also set the tone and bring nostalgia about family traditions and fond holiday memories.

“Incandescent lights are so warm and just make sense on a cold winter night,” said an anonymous student.

Unfortunately, that means LED lights came in last with a total of 58 votes (51 anonymous and 7 personal). With their cool blue glow, many students can still appreciate the multicolor aptitude of Christmas lights.

“While the harsh blue is not always perfect, there are some LED options that are a softer and warmer tone,” said Andrea Flores ‘26, “I much prefer the safety and cheaper option of LED lights rather than incandescent.”

Around campus, a mix of both styles has already started appearing in dorm windows, showing that the holiday spirit does not just depend on the type of lights you have. Whether you prefer the warm glow of multi-color incandescent lights or the cooler tone of LED lights, how will you choose to brighten your holiday season this year?
