Women’s Rugby: An Unbreakable Bond

By Lauren Price

The women’s rugby field is an exciting place to be when the Maroons are playing. Rugby is very similar to football – without the padding sure – but it still does include rough tackling. The team is composed of girls who have mostly never had experience with the game, but that’s one of the many aspects that makes it fun. Everybody is learning together all thanks to their coach Jeremy Miller (nicknamed Melly by the team). He has helped to produce a very strong group of women who all love the sport. The Maroons have only had one tournament so far, but have been very successful with a clean record of 2-0-1. One of the elements that makes this team so strong is their unbreakable camaraderie. Captain Grace Clemens states, “The single best thing about rugby is the camaraderie. I don’t know many places where you can tackle someone and then get up and be friends. The rugby team is truly something special.” She also adds, “…I’m ecstatic to see how we continue to grow as a team. I couldn’t be prouder to be captain of these women.” This team has special, memorable bonds that will last for many years to come.

If you’re considering joining, the team does not have tryouts, so anybody interested in playing rugby should visit a practice held on Elizabeth Campus held during Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30PM-6:00PM. The team has had a fluctuating number of players and was unfortunately hit hard during COVID-19, so if anyone is interested in joining the women’s rugby team, your commitment will be much appreciated. The team currently does not have any more home matches, however their next game is hosted at Catholic University on September 22nd. Go ‘Noke!
