Snow Day Storytime

Last weekend, our little corner of the world was subject to levels of snow probably seen often in other parts of the world, but intense for southern Virginia! I hope all you dear readers were able to stay warm and dry during the times our campus was basically closed.

I know a lot of people went out to play in the snow, especially on Sunday and Monday before everything froze over. My dorm hall is littered with snow boots and various shovels and sleds, as I’m sure many of your halls are as well. My roommate went on a walk on Sunday because she said she was “too hot” in our room!

I did go out a few times, but I didn’t really play in the snow all that much, especially not after it started freezing over into big chunks of solid, icy material packed around the slick walkways across campus. The thing I did do with the snow, though, was make snow ice cream!

Before I reveal the recipe, I have to warn you that it was honestly pretty mediocre. The texture was not a typical ice cream consistency. But I believe the joy is more from making it than eating it! What I did was mix a cup of milk, half a cup of sugar, and a little vanilla and salt in a bowl, then mix it with a big mixing bowl full of CLEAN, UNTOUCHED snow. It ended up making way too much, though, and in hindsight, I probably should have made it in individual bowls rather than a big batch. Still, it was a fun little experiment, and I don’t regret doing it!
