Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic

It was a weekend full of basketball here in the Cregger Center. Women’s basketball competed in the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic and invited Hollins University, Eastern University, and Centre College. All of the teams performed well and created a great atmosphere for this year’s basketball season.

Roanoke College had their first home game of the season against the Eagles of Eastern University. The Maroons started their scoring campaign early in the game but were almost overtaken by the Eagles at the end of the first quarter. After a quick break though the Maroons were able to summon back up a sizable lead with a margin of almost 20 points going into halftime. The second half was also quite eventful as all Roanoke players had an opportunity to play in their first home match. The game ended with a 33-point win margin over the Eagles.

These two statistics were not the only good ones though. Four Roanoke players were able to score at least 10 points, including Ashley Fowler, a transfer student from Coker University. Ashley played for Coker University during her freshman season before deciding to transfer to Roanoke College. This decision was made because she wanted to continue playing basketball while also pursuing a good academic opportunity. Fowler had good success on the court last season, and it seems she is striving to be even better than last year. Fowler’s success on the court could help to win some pivotal games, especially in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The second game in their home tournament would be against the Colonels of Centre College. Centre had some missed opportunities early in the game which were able to help the Maroons score early. The Colonels got into a bit of a groove late and were only down by 1 point going into the half. Both teams had a bit of a “magic hand” during the third quarter and eventually ended that quarter tied at 44 a-piece. While the Maroons were not able to outscore Centre in the fourth quarter, the game was able to help the team establish a rhythm on the court that can be used in future contests. The next game for Roanoke will be November 22nd at 4:00PM in the Cregger Center.
