The iconic Saturday Night Live comedy show is celebrating its 50th anniversary, performing memorable and hilarious skits since 1975. To commemorate such an occasion, SNL decided to create a 50th anniversary skit that displayed not only fan favorite shows, but also brought back some nostalgic history, whether from returning actors from the older eras or the accumulation of the show.
The opening song was sung by Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon, singing “Homeward Bound.” It’s even more significant when you realize that back in 1976, this same song was performed on SNL nearly half a decade ago. Steve Martin and John Mulaney entered shortly after with a charming monologue, shouting out and honoring the immense number of
writers who poured their hearts and creativity towards every project.
The “Lawrence Welk” sketch started strong with returning actors such as Will Ferrell, followed up by the return of “Black Jeopardy” as Chris Rock, who also made a surprise appearance. As followed was a funny, but sweet video showcasing all the varied forms of physical comedy SNL has shown over the past 50 years, presenting iconic falls, wacky stunts, and uncontrollable bleeding.
Similarly, the very popular “Domingo” sketch also makes a return with even
funnier bits that build off its predecessor. Afterwards, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler go through a Q&A asked by an audience full of a variety of famous stars across SNL and Hollywood in general. Miley Cyrus and Britney Howard go on to perform
“Nothing Compares 2 U” and blow viewers away with their stellar voices.
Overall, it was an incredible anniversary that showed the best in SNL, celebrating the 50-year long journey they’ve been through to stand where they are today.
