The men’s soccer team (5-0-1, 1-0 ODAC) has been on an absolute ride so far this season. Since their first game, the Maroons have been able to defend their own end while contributing heavily in the offensive zone. Through six games, the Maroons have been able to outscore their opponents a total of 19-2. This year’s team is filled with young, talented players that are continuing to prove themselves game after game.
To kick off the season, the Maroons took on local rival, University of Lynchburg. Despite the game being in Lynchburg, there was no home field advantage for the Hornets as the Maroons took them out with a 4-1 win. The next game for the Maroons had a very similar result, this time at home. The Maroons hosted visiting Regent and beat them in a truly royal fashion, holding them scoreless in a 10-0 game. The Maroons continued their tirade against Maryville (1-0 win), Greensboro College (2-0 win), and the University of Mary Washington in a highly defensive game that resulted in a 0-0 draw. Though the team has incredible depth, there is one player in particular that has helped propel this team to their continued success: goalkeeper Zach Behe. Behe has started in all five of the team’s matches so far and is an integral part of why the team has only allowed two goals this season. As he tends goal, he has shot to the top of the ODAC Stat Leaders. Behe’s .24 goals against average has propelled him to the top of the leaderboard, leading all ODAC goalkeepers with this incredible feat.
This past Tuesday, the Maroons took on ODAC competitor Guilford College on the road. In a long game, the Maroon outlasted the Quakers to win it in double-overtime. In the first half, midfielder Luca Kuettel kicked off the scoring with an unassisted goal. Guilford came back to tie in the second half, only for defender Tim Leuenberger to score the game winner in the second overtime period. The Maroons now have an ODAC-leading 5-0-1 record and are 1-0-0 within the conference. Be sure to catch these Maroons as they continue their hot streak against rival Lynchburg on September 28th at 6 PM. Go Maroons!
