Super Bowl LIII between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams featured countless storylines.
A battle of old foes, a Super Bowl XXVI rematch when the Rams were still located in St. Louis, widely considered the greatest show on turf while the young Tom Brady was just in his second season as a pro and playing in his first Super Bowl.
Fast forward 17 years, and now Brady finds himself competing for his ninth Lombardi trophy at 41 years old, playing against a Rams team that has moved back to the West Coast and is riding with the former number one overall pick, Jared Goff, a mere 24 years old. This is the largest age gap between starting quarterbacks competing in the big game.
Then, you’ve got the dynasty versus the rising empire. The Patriots have been the definition of consistency under the direction of mastermind head coach, Bill Belichick. No coach has more playoff victories than Belichick. On the other side, the young buck, offensive guru, Sean McVay lead the Rams to back to back playoff appearances since taking over as head coach.
Finally, an all but guaranteed high flying scoring affair showcasing the second and third ranked points per game offenses in the league.
All the hype for the biggest game of the year and fans are left with a defensive chess match. A game truly won in the trenches, the Patriots were able to pull away with a 13-3 victory. For a game lacking offense, wide receiver Julian Edelman was able to run home with the MVP award racking up 10 catches for 141 yards.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft had this to say after the game, “There is one constant throughout this whole eighteen years, two men who are the best at whatever has been done in the history of the NFL: Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.”
The Patriots franchise secured their sixth Super Bowl title, moving them into first all time tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers. For the Rams and the other 30 teams, it’s back to the drawing board to figure out how to slow down this impeccable dynasty. For the Patriots, it’s right back to business.
