Fifth Disharmony: Indefinite Hiatus Disappoints Harmonizers

Written by Harrison Mines

Much to the disappointment of loyal fans, famed girl group Fifth Harmony released a joint statement Monday morning announcing an indefinite hiatus. Representing members Ally, Dinah, Lauren and Normani, the blanket social media post stated:

“In order to stay authentic to ourselves and to you, we do need to take some time for now to go on a hiatus from Fifth Harmony in order to pursue solo endeavors.”

Though some fans, including popular artist and musician Sam Smith, expressed online dismay, overall reception of this announcement was not unexpected in light of 5H’s fifth member Camila Cabello’s exit from the group in December 2016.

In the past year, Fifth Harmony members had already begun to dip into solo music ventures. Lauren Jauregui appeared on Halsey’s latest album on the ballad “Strangers” and appeared solo on different occasions to perform with the pop star as a duet.

Similarly, Normani Kordei recently teamed up with up-and-comer Khalid on the Love, Simon soundtrack, now gaining popularity rapidly on global streaming charts. Though drama between group members has been rumored to have caused the split, it is likely that the quartet is aiming for more creative freedom and identity among themselves, ending their stint as a team on a positive note.

Much like the way that devout Harmonizers have grown in the six years since Fifth Harmony’s debut, this collective agreement to hiatus may be an opportunity for each solo artist mature, flourish and, hopefully, share new music.
