Commons Concoctions

With so many great food options available from Commons each day, it can be almost overwhelming to choose what you want sometimes! What if nothing sounds quite right to eat or drink at a particular meal? Or what if your friend challenges you to try something new?!

Fear not! With so many options comes the ability to create whatever you want! Here are my top 3 creations – and I promise none of them will make you sick!

Number 3 is what I call Uranium Drink. Despite the alarming name, Uranium Drink is perfectly harmless; in fact, it’s actually helped me feel better when I feel a little sick! All you have to do is mix ginger ale and lemon-lime Gatorade in an equal ratio. I like to have it with light ice.

Number 2 is a drink that’s a bit more complicated. Fill a glass about halfway with orange juice, then add half that amount of cranberry cocktail. Finally, top off the drink with either pink lemonade or Sprite/Starry, depending on how much fizz you like! Personally, I prefer the pink lemonade for the color it adds to the drink, which makes it look like a Salem Sunrise – which is why I called the drink that!

And finally, the creation I’m most proud of: mac and cheese! This one relies on the pasta and salad bars being open, and butter packets available as well. But if it’s lunch or dinner time, the chances are very high you’ll be able to access all the ingredients! Basically, what you’ll have to do is make the cheese sauce in the microwave before tossing your pasta in it. To make the sauce, put some butter and a little milk in a microwave-safe bowl, along with a pinch of parmesan cheese. Heat that until the butter is melted. If you heat this mixture enough at this step, you can just pour your shredded cheddar cheese in and mix until combined. If the cheese doesn’t quite melt, just keep microwaving in short bursts until it does! It’s very simple once you get the hang of it, but I must admit that it took me and my friend last year a good two weeks to perfect the recipe and technique.

These are just a few of the things you could do with Commons ingredients. I’ve seen a lot more, and I’m sure you all could come up with things even I’ve never seen!
