Making decisions is scary. Especially when it comes to the path you will take during your four years at Roanoke College. There is one thing that I really value from this school, and that is the ability to avoid getting stuck on a single path. You can look at pictures of the brain and study the mind in Psychology classes while also challenging your own mind to create beautiful poems and amazing stories in Creative Writing.
A lot of people come here without having an idea of what program they would like to graduate from. Others are dead set on a major only to find something else that makes them even more passionate about learning. You have time to explore what you really want to do. As long as you keep track of the requirements necessary for graduation, you can take other classes that may not have anything to do with your major but that make you excited to come to school and learn skills you never knew you wanted. And, looking at all the programs offered in the major checklists, you might find that some of those classes apply for a minor, or a concentration, or even an exploration.
In my experience, I had a messy learning path filled with a lot of different classes from very different departments, some of which don’t apply to an official title. This is something that worked for me, because it kept the joy of learning alive. If you are someone who needs more structure, I recommend that you spend a long time planning as soon as possible. Play around with your schedule for next semester/year, research programs you might want to declare in, pay attention to posters and emails promoting new classes, and most importantly, enjoy your journey.
