On My Soul!

Bruno Mars, an artist that took over the radio with his breakout album “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” in 2010, “24K Magic” in 2016, and now “The Romantic” in 2026. The highly anticipated album was released February 27th with a total of 9 songs and runs 31 minutes. Albeit a short album at first glance, it’s in his typical range to only have between 9-10 songs per album. The longest album he’s released was his first album with 12 songs.

What is this new album about? 5 years since his release “An Evening With Silk Sonic” brings listeners on a journey through a refreshingly nostalgic yet new sound. It feels like a continuation of Silk Sonic but with a more personal and confessional tone. The tracks are as follows: “Risk It All,” “Cha Cha Cha,” “I Just Might,” “God Was Showing Off,” “Why You Wanna Fight? ,” “On My Soul,” “Dance With Me,” “Something Serious,” “Nothing Left,” and “Dance with Me.”

This album showcases a vulnerable side of Mars that feels authentic. Mars has always balanced tenderness with seriousness in his music, but here he fully leans into that emotional honesty. The album’s narrative centers on the highs and lows of love. The single “I Just Might” highlights the emotions of falling for someone quickly while “Why You Wanna Fight?” explores the tension between passions and conflicts in relationships.

Musically, the album blends 1970s soul with 1980s R&B. “On My Soul” was a song that I consistently listened to since it plays with a bouncier bassline and an almost mischievous groove. The arrangement suggests a jam-session of energy as if the song emerged from a moment of in-studio experimentation rather than meticulous planning.

Despite its recent release, The Romantic has already generated significant buzz on social media. I have seen users on TikTok utilize the song “Risk It All” to showcase their partners. Fans across social media platforms praise the albums’ emotional depth and cohesive storytelling, while critics highlight Mars’ vocal control and meticulous production.

Ultimately, The Romantic reinforces Mars’ ability to reinvent himself while honoring the musical eras that inspire him. It is a compact, emotionally rich project that bridges generations and showcases an artist unafraid to let listeners see behind the curtain.
