Thanksgiving Food Waste Crisis

Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for the people that make our lives a little more enjoyable each day. It is also about the great amount of delicious food that gets set on the table. With this holiday a great amount of food waste occurs every single year. To battle this issue there are some things you can do at each step of the meal to ensure we waste as little food as possible.

Before the meal, have a plan. Know how many people will join you at the table. Look up recipes and get a sense of how much food you need for the amounts of servings you need. Don’t be tricked by deals (let’s admit it, deals are great until you find yourself with five cans of pumpkin puree and no use for them). Do your best to prevent waste.

During the meal, use everything. As you cook, try to use every part of the element you are working with. For example, a pumpkin. You don’t have to throw away the seeds or the guts just to use the pumpkin for a pie. The seeds can be toasted in an oven, and they become a delicious snack! Meanwhile the stringy guts can be used in pumpkin soup.

Finally, make leftovers fun! Use the components of the Thanksgiving dinner, such as turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and more to mix them into a salad, sandwich them, or pot pie them! The sky is the limit when it comes to leftovers. The most important part is to be mindful of food waste and do our part to reduce it.
