Semester Survival Guide

With the midway point of September passed and the beginning of autumn just around the corner, most Roanoke College students have pretty much settled into their fall semester routines. However, it’s all too easy to fall out of place; one missed commitment can so easily turn to two, to three, until a few weeks have passed and you realize you’ve all but been left behind. If this sounds like you? Don’t worry! I have absolutely been in that position before. That’s why I’d like to offer my top five pieces of advice for staying afloat and having a successful fall!

1)      Cultivate relationships with your professors. I know this can be nerve-racking, but I PROMISE it’s worth it. Speak up in class, chat for a few minutes before or after lectures, attend office hours, or even book an appointment with your professors, especially if you need help with something. This will make it much easier for them to help you!

2)      Keep an agenda or calendar. Whether you’re a visual person or prefer to just have things in your calendar app, making a list of all your commitments, especially the weekly ones, will help you stay on track!

3)      Schedule relaxation time. It can be really easy to fill every day with things to do, but putting too much on your plate will cause burnout – and quickly. Time for yourself is important for a successful semester, so long as you make sure your other priorities are met, too!

4)      Eat regularly. Take advantage of your meal plan (if you have it)! Freshmen especially, I strongly recommend figuring out approximately how many swipes you use in a week and then using your extras early in the week at Cav to pick up snacks for the rest of the week!

5)      Keep your friends close. Roanoke College is a community, so please don’t be afraid to rely on others for support! There are so many resources here, but the most important, in my opinion, are the friends you’ve chosen!
