Lessons from the Man of La Mancha

The start of the new school year can be a scary time, particularly when starting at a new school. There are new challenges, and you might not know the best way to take on new challenges. Nonetheless, the fact that you are here at Roanoke proves your worthiness to be here, even if it takes time to acclimate.

The story of Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes is timeless, and its portrayal in the 1965 musical “Man of La Mancha” is no different. However, the musical was never meant to be a rendition of “Don Quixote”, only loosely based on it. “Man of La Mancha” starred Richard Kiley in the titular role and won five Tony Awards in its original run. Songs such as “The Impossible Dream” and “Dulcinea” were introduced by the musical. There are many important lessons in the show.

The first important lesson to take away from Man of La Mancha is that anything is possible if you make it so. Don Quixote has many run-ins with people who think he’s crazy for seeing things that are not there, but he persists, pursuing his dream. Said dream is to become a knight-errant and the model of chivalry. Your dreams are likely different, but Don Quixote tells us to follow those dreams. The dreams may seem impossible, but that is only if you don’t pursue them.

The second lesson is to pursue your passion, even if the steps to reach it seem silly. The first enemy Don Quixote faces is a windmill he believes to be a giant. The audience can see the windmill, though. It looks silly to them, but real to Don Quixote. No matter how silly it looks to others, it is still important to follow what will help you reach the success you are striving towards.

The third lesson is to keep time for fun and nonsense. As Cervantes says in the musical, “Perhaps to be too practical is madness.” A focus on classes and homework is important but take the time to get involved in something fun, whether joining a club, going on outdoor adventure trips, picking up a new hobby, or finding new reading for fun.

Strive with all your courage to reach the unreachable stars. You may be surprised!
