Why You Should Spend Your Spring Break Volunteering

This Spring Break, the Center for Civic Engagement headed by Jesse Griffin will be leading a disaster relief trip to Asheville, North Carolina. On this trip, we will be doing Hurricane recovery work, including potential home reconstruction, bridge reconstruction, and material delivery for families still affected by Hurricane Helene. We will be working with Lutheran Disaster Relief and staying at Lutheridge camp in heated cabins during this week. This is a wonderful opportunity to use your time and abilities to help people and communities who would greatly benefit.

One of the best things I have done while at this college is participate in alternative break trips. The first trip I went on was one to Boone, NC where we worked with Habitat for Humanity remodeling a former habitat house. During this trip, I created friendships that have lasted to this day, and likely will continue beyond graduation. I also learned how important and freeing it is to use your time helping others. At the end of that week, we were told we set this house ahead 3 months of schedule. When I look back at my time at Roanoke, alternative break trips stand out as one of the starkest highlights. This trip will be as fun and rewarding as all of the others. I hope to see y’all there!
