Staying active on campus

Roanoke College seeks to care for students’ health and well-being in many different ways, with resources such as health and services, budget planning events, counseling services, and more. We are made up of our economic, spiritual, mental, or physical health. It is important for us as college students, who are most likely living on our own, to care for that health.

A great way to make sure our bodies are as strong and healthy as they can be is by exercising. One of the most important parts of staying active is consistency. Creating a fitness plan that aligns with your needs and schedule is the best way to create a habit. Unfortunately, motivation is something that we lack sometimes. But, there are certain things I can recommend to battle that.

Find a gym buddy, whether that’s a friend, a partner, or just another person you see visiting the gym at the same time as you. Having someone to keep you accountable when you can’t find motivation can be really helpful. Try creating a schedule that works for both of you! To take it a step further, if it’s possible, having a group of people with similar goals to yours can help you keep that discipline.

You can also join a different physical activity! Outdoor adventures sometimes require you to sign up for a lot and pay a fee depending on the activity planned for the day. The advantage is that you will get to leave campus for a few hours and explore fun places and activities like paddleboarding or rock climbing.

If you are looking for a more constant (and free) schedule, then make sure to read the daily emails. In there, you’ll find different group fitness activities happening every week. Whether you decide to stick with the classic elliptical or try a line dancing class, make sure to move those muscles from time to time to ensure your body has the strength it needs to live a healthy life.
