Starting The Semester On A Positive Note

A new semester begins, and so does the new year. The first week has passed and you have gotten a sense of how your classes will be for the rest of the semester. If we want to start on a positive note, now is the time to form good habits from the very beginning!

First– taking notes. I can’t stress enough the importance of taking notes in your classes from the very beginning and on. Taking notes, whether on a notebook or a computer, helps you concentrate on the lecture and hopefully stops your mind from wandering. They are also a great resource to return to when it’s time to study for a test, especially the finals. Many professors keep all their slides and information on Inquire but they might explain more in detail during the lecture and add important things you might want to write down.

Second– keeping track of your schedule. I recommend getting a planner or a dry erase wall calendar where you can write down all your assignments for the week and make sure you don’t forget anything important! Even though it is the beginning of the semester this is a good habit to get into so that it is easier to keep track of assignments later on when everything starts to pile up.

Finally– be aware of your resources and don’t wait until the last minute to ask for help. The writing center, student teaching, student hours and more are all available for you to use. I highly encourage you to try them out if there is a moment in which you struggle to keep up with a class.

Have a great semester, Maroons!
