What Happened to Thanksgiving?

Is it Grinch-like of me to get annoyed at Christmas celebrations and good tidings before Thanksgiving? Everywhere I turn it seems like the world and campus are ready for the winter holidays. It does not matter what you celebrate, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas or anything else. These holidays are all over the big supermarkets and box stores. There are Christmas mugs and yard decorations being sold, and Hanukkah-themed stuffed animals on the shelves. With all the Christmas music being played everywhere, I’m starting to get a headache.

While I am not the biggest fan of the holiday season, I do have tolerance for it. I prepare myself for the Christmas onslaught of clothes, decorations, food, drinks, and music. That’s why it drives me a little crazy to see so many holiday decorations around campus. The potent candy canes and snowflakes are all over the lovely fall decorations and flavors. I have already found announcements for holiday parties in my inbox and we have not even left for Thanksgiving break yet! I recognize that not everyone does Thanksgiving and many do not consider it a holiday, but for me, it has always been a day of family. While the winter season can overwhelm you with many responsibilities, Thanksgiving is a time to come together.

I love buying presents for my friends and family. It brings me a lot of joy and is some of the most fun I get out of the year. What I don’t like is the loud jingle bells, and how so many want to shove Christmas down my throat. If that makes me a Grinch then so be it.
