Main Street Series: Charlotte’s Web Antique Mall

One of the benefits of living on a campus as small as ours is that you’re never more than ten minutes away from Main Street. A few weeks ago, we started this series to encourage
students to take advantage of that fact by exploring the wonderful businesses available to us!

This week we’ll be hearing from Charlotte’s Web Antique Mall.
Antiquing has been a hobby steadily on the rise for a long time now, and the younger generation has been a big part of bringing it back. Charlotte’s Web has a collection of antiques
that students are constantly finding new treasures in! To tell us more about this shop, Lisa, the cashier, spoke to me this week.

Q: How did you get started in this business?
A: My journey into the world of antiques began with a simple passion for buying and
selling. It all started with me selling items in my sister’s booth at Charlotte’s Web Antique Mall
before my sister and I began sharing a booth. Eventually, I moved on to managing my own
booth. I started working part-time for fun, but it became a full-time commitment after I retired,
and I took on the responsibility of running the cash register.
Q: Do you get to interact with students often?
A: I enjoy interacting with a variety of customers, especially the college students who
frequently shop with us.
Q: How does being close to campus affect your business?
A: Being located so close to the campus in Salem has been a big advantage for our
business, as the students shop regularly and often bring their friends. The steady flow of college
customers keeps things lively, and it’s always great to see familiar faces.
Q: What is your process for finding and receiving antiques?
A: For sourcing items, I love the hunt. I frequently visit estate sales and tag sales, and I
also buy, sell, and trade with friends. It’s always exciting to find something unique to add to the
booth, and I take pride in curating a collection that reflects a variety of tastes and interests.
