Family weekend

by Mia shelton

Cheers to the first weekend of fall!  Many are eager for the season of crunchy leaves, pretty trees, and pumpkin seeds.  Take in the crisp autumn air and enjoy some time around campus.  School has settled in nicely and routines are in place.  Freedom fills the air, but not this weekend- parents are comin’ to town!

Enjoy the first weekend of fall with your dearly missed parents this family weekend!  While the school has planned some activities for you and loved ones, venture off campus to give your family the true Salem experience.  Here are a few local spots around Salem to spend quality time with your family.

For museum lovers, there are a few options to venture.  On East Main Street, there is the Salem Museum, just within walking distance.  Every Saturday, from 10 AM to 4 PM, visitors can partake in Hands-On-History.  The museum will let visitors hold Salem artifacts while learning the history of the town.  After touchin’ some old bones, venture down to the City of Roanoke and visit the Taubman Museum of Art.  On Saturday, they are offering “Paint Your Pet Home Kits” from 10 AM to 5 PM.  You can register on their website, under the “Happenings” tab.  Each kit includes a 16×24 canvas, paints, paintbrushes, step by step instructions, and a printed reference picture.  When you arrive to the museum for your registered time, pick up your kit at the front desk!

If your family has an outdoor buff, Salem is the place to be!  There are plenty of hiking trails around Salem and Roanoke. Catawba Mountain, Four George Trail, Dragon’s Tooth, and McAfee Knob are all common ones nearby.  Enjoy quality family time and beautiful fall weather on a glorious hike.  Take pictures or have a picnic.  Traveling down West Main Street, turn into Dixie Caverns and enjoy the underground terrain.  Stop in the gift shop and buy yourself a memento, you deserve it!

Enjoy family weekend and all that comes with it; hug your loved ones extra tight and celebrate everyone there in the moment.  Adventure through Salem and learn something new. Have a great Family Weekend!
