RC Dining Hacks

by Marisa Seager

Over my time at Roanoke College and especially as a picky eater, there are a few tips and tricks that I’ve picked up along the way. So, here are a few that can be used on most days if not all of them:

  • Quesadilla: Order a toasted wrap or flatbread of your choice from Freshens but only with chicken, cheese, and sauce (optional). The easiest way to do this is through the mobile ordering app and by picking the wrap or flatbread that would have the least amount of ingredients to take off.
    • Before Cavern closed for renovations, I used to get chicken from there and take it back to my room to put inside a tortilla with cheese and chipotle sauce. However, while Cravetown is still around you can always just wait and order an actual quesadilla, but this way you can get one almost any time.
  • (Better) pizza: Go to commons for some regular cheese pizza, grab some toppings from the salad bar, and take it back to your room to finish the job. Sometimes even just extra cheese and a topping or two can make the pizza here a lot better and different from the usual option between plain cheese and pepperoni.
  • Bacon (no egg) and cheese: Any time that commons has bacon on the menu I often swing by to toast a bagel with cream cheese and put some bacon on top. This is a recipe that I’ve been making ever since working at Dunkin Donuts in my early teenage years.
  • Chicken Sandwich: Now I know that sometimes this is already on the menu but there’s always a chance to change it up as it can be done with any chicken and any type of bread. One time I put a crispy chicken fillet between two pieces of garlic bread as both of these items were on the menu when I went.

Aside from these hacks be sure to take advantage of takeout items! This including but not limited to the following: bagels, ingredients from the salad bar, utensils, peanut butter, sauce packets, and tea bags. We are broke college students after all.
