Returning Student State of Mind

By Mia Shelton

It’s lovely to see everyone’s shining faces back on campus.  It can be stressful coming back to campus with a new set of standards like in person classes, new teachers, and for some a new school. Let’s all take a deep breath; it might seem daunting but totally exciting!

As a returning student, there are some tips I wish I had to guide me through the beginning of my college experience.  Here are some that I have collected to help you get back into the groove.

First, it’s cool to make new friends!  Saying hi to everyone can be rewarding.  Don’t be scared to share a teaspoon of your heart with others.  Good things come to those who wait, and to those who treat others with kindness.  Sometimes relationships and friendships go downhill and that’s totally normal.  Treat everyone the way you wish to be treated and the right people will find you.  Making friends in your classes help.  Always find a study buddy- they will help you through the thick of college!

Always try to plan ahead!  Way easier said than done, but you will thank yourself later.  Finding a time to get all assignments done is important, it is the reason why you are here. Completing homework on your free time will help clear up your schedule for the weekend.  Your teachers are here to help, they want to make connections with you.  Talking to teachers about the courses you are taking will help your experience in the class.  You always get out of the experience what you put in.  Between a study buddy and your teachers, you are bound to succeed.

Lastly, really take this time to learn who you are.  Take time for yourself!  At the end of the day, you always have yourself.  Take the time to learn who you are and who you want to be.  Learn to do things for yourself and celebrate the small victories.  You turned in an assignment that you’ve been putting off?  Celebrate with some ice cream!  You had a bad day, buy yourself something nice and know it’s going to be okay.  You got yourself through the bad day, don’t be scared to celebrate that it’s over.

You are loved, kind, and so important so don’t forget it!  Everyone is so excited to see how you shine!  Be yourself and love how you wish to be loved.
