Tips to Combat Negative Body Image

Written by Mia Shelton

Hello all my beauties! The world is getting warmer, and flowers are blooming; spring is among us! The warm weather can be a happy time for many, but also a very insecure time for others. The pressure to fit into a specific size or look a certain way can certainly consume one’s mind. Worrying about bathing suit season or putting on a pair of shorts, no matter the size, can be stressful and lead to an unhealthy mindset.

It’s easy for someone to tell you to stop, or you shouldn’t care, but that doesn’t help. That won’t satisfy the small voice that tells you devilish lies. Here are some things to help tame that self-deprecating voice.

Positive affirmations! Every morning when you get dressed, list out all of the things you like about yourself- physical and mental. Acknowledge all of the good things you might be blind to. There are plenty of things that make you a beautiful specimen. This isn’t a self-conceited task. It’s self-love.

Whenever you are feelin’ extra beautiful, don’t be afraid to have a photoshoot. Show yourself off. You should be your number one fan! Don’t be afraid to flaunt yourself every once in a while. Gather some friends and make a day of it! You’re beautiful, so don’t hide it from the world!

Write a letter to yourself that you can keep handy at all times. Whenever you are feeling low, have that note handy so you can remind yourself how gorgeous you are. I suggest keeping it in your phone case, wallet, purse, or backpack. Write all of your positive affirmations in this note. Remind yourself, you are worth it. There isn’t a person in this world that won’t cherish you- make sure you remind yourself that as well. Write of things that will make you happy, or old memories that keep you going. Everyone is rooting for you. You should be too!

Summertime can be challenging. There is a lot that can hide under a smile. Don’t forget to check up on friends and only spread kindness. At the end of the day, you will never be alone. You will always have yourself. Might as well make the time you have with yourself good! Don’t get caught up with whatever others are doing. No one will be able to hold the flare and beauty you contain. Keep your chin up buttercup, and don’t forget. You will forever and always will be beautiful!
