A man recently returned a library book 72 years overdue to the Amagansett Free Library in New York. The book, “Great Heart: the Life Story of Benjamin Franklin” by Daniel Henderson, was due back on April 5, 1949. A Mattituck man named John Moss discovered the volume in one of his storage crates. He said he isn’t sure how the book, a first edition from 1919 with the original library bookplate, ended up in his possession. Good thing Amagansett Free Library has gotten rid of late fees – based on the 1949 penny-a-day penalty, the fine for this overdue book would have amounted to 262 dollars!
