“Harriet” Receives Mixed Opinions

Written by Alexandra Gautier

If you ask anyone if they know who Harriet Tubman is, the answer is a resounding “yes!” Her story of running from enslavement in Maryland to the free state of Philadelphia and being instrumental in the Underground Railroad may be the extent of any non-historian’s knowledge on the impressive and inspiring woman. The newly released film Harriet provides the audience with a new level of familiarity to Tubman’s story of overcoming even the most improbable odds. Though the movie does illustrate the brutality of racism of the time, it is reportedly less brutal than some other films set in the same time period, such as 12 Years a Slave.

Though many are singing the praises of all involved in the film, especially Cynthia Erivo who portrays Harriet, there has been some backlash received. The controversy of the film began when the British actress Erivo was cast to play the role of Harriet, instead of an American woman with personal roots tying them to this point in history. Further outcries against the film began to crop up regarding the perceived affection shown towards the slave master and alienation of the African American slave bounty hunter.

Others have been heralding this film as one that is not simply a movie about slavery, but instead one that speaks about how with great strength and persistence, it is possible to overcome even the most horrifying of situations. I urge viewers to go see this extremely significant film and learn more about the woman who is, let’s face it, an absolute icon.
