On Friday, Sept. 16, cities across the island of Ireland displayed their art, history, and culture as part of an annual celebration dubbed “Culture Night.” Derry/Londonderry, the UK’s “City of Culture”, joined in the festivities with a wide assortment of events and exhibitions throughout the city, beginning at 11 a.m. and running late into the night.
Practically every event was free to the public, and attendance was encouraged at concerts, art shows, and demonstrations as they walked around the city. Museums opened their doors, giving free tours and displaying special exhibitions prepared specifically for Culture Night. Guides took people around the city’s spectacular walls which are turning 400 years old this year. Derry/Londonderry has suffered a troubled past, but the current focus is on peace, sharing, and reconciliation. This mindset could be clearly seen in a workshop organized by Children in Crossfire, which invited kids and their families to “Create your own Master Peace” by using art to explore the value of peace.
Derry/Londonderry showcased its rich history along with its wealth of artistic talent. Concerts filled venues across the city, from tiny churches and thought-provoking work of numerous artists. People could even see a completely crocheted replica of the city, crafted by a group of local ladies. By making these events free and accessible, Culture Night here in Ireland enabled multitudes of people to experience the vibrant culture that Derry/Londonderry has to offer.
