Roanoke College offers many intercollegiate sport programs for student-athletes to get involved in. Most notably here on campus being, lacrosse, basketball, and baseball. These teams draw in the largest crowds for home games and occasionally see students and fans travel for away games or ODAC tournaments. While those sports are most highly recognized, the Brackety-Ack would like to acknowledge a set of teams that maybe slide under the radar a little bit- men’s and women’s tennis. It’s tough for people to see them on a regular basis because they play their home matches at Elizabeth Campus. While it is an easy drive or a simple walk away, especially in this beautiful spring weather, the fan turnout is not great. The paper would like to recognize them in the last issue of the 2019 spring BA, featuring some of the nicest people on campus, and well-renowned student athletes.
The women’s tennis team is currently 9-6, while posting an impressive 7-3 ODAC record. On senior day, long standing team members Arabella Goralski and Kelly MacCluen both swept their singles matches, and also paired up in doubles to take home an 8-1 victory against Hollins. These wins helped lead the team to a dominant 9-0 performance at home. The women play their final match of the season against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, April 20th at 2pm.
The men’s team has had a different road this season, posting a 7-9 record, while staying above .500 in the ODAC at 5-4. On their senior day, they etched a W into the win column, fending off Bridgewater, 5-4. Lone senior, Alston Martin helped gather the team win with a 8-6 victory in doubles with partner, Jack Dorris. The team plays next at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, April 20th beginning at 11am. Their final game of the season is away against Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday, April 23rd starting at 4pm.
Both teams have worked extremely hard this season and look forward to rounding out the year with victories. Go Maroons!
