Get Empowered with Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel, released on March 8, 2019 in the United States is the 21st movie released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie is set in 1995 and follows the story of Carol Danvers, an amnesiac human woman who believes she is a member of the Kree race of aliens from the planet Hala. She travels to Earth to stop an invasion of Skrull warriors, the Kree’s sworn enemies, and ends up finding answers to questions about her hazy past.

Brie Larson leads the cast as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. She teams up with Avenger’s founder Nick Fury played by Samuel L. Jackson and old Air-Force buddy, Maria Rambo, played by Lashana Lynch. Together they must stop an invasion of Earth and restore Carol’s lost memory.

Like most of the movies in the MCU, Captain Marvel uses epic fight scenes and eye-catching special effects to move forward a tried and true plot. Unlike other Marvel movies, this film was lead by a female superhero, a first for the MCU and a relatively new phenomenon for superhero movies as a genre.

Despite this seemingly “radical” change, Captain Marvel treated Carol Danvers the same way Marvel treats all of its male superheroes.

There were a few scenes of female empowerment, including a montage of Carol proving men wrong, but overall the movie is a superhero action/adventure.

There were moments where the script could have been stronger, and the dialogue delivery seemed a bit forced, but other than everything about this movie was strong and fun.

Overall, Captain Marvel rates a 8.5/10 with points off for dialogue. For a great film experience with a side of empowerment, take the family and find out what makes her a hero.
