People love to complain, and in college, we have a lot of complain worthy deemed real estate class work; dorm life; boys… At the same time, we want to be listened to, and treated as adults. There’s a reason that young people hung out around and learned from Socrates what, to a crowd of students, is not appealing about an old barefooted man who walks around questioning the guys in charge?
It makes sense, then, to think that we should all be thrilled to vote. Here, we too have the chance to criticize authority and for once be heard and considered! Lately though, I have felt disillusioned and disappointed to hear that my peers do not seem to feel inclined to participate in the upcoming election. Many students are “just not into voting”, “don’t really do that”, or “would have no idea who to vote for”.
To these students, I ask: PLEASE VOTE! Pick an issue that you care about, and vote for someone who will support it. The life of this democracy depends entirely on our willingness to communicate with our politicians. Not to mention, our rights to vote have been fought long and hard for. Don’t let these efforts be in vain, and don’t take what you have for granted. Not all people even have the capabilities to vote today, so even if you are not voting for yourself, vote for the disenfranchised. I think it is safe to say that both the left, right, and middle can agree that some things in this country need changing. So, let’s make this change happen!
