Though classes were cancelled for one day during Hurricane Florence in September, the impact of flooding at RC at that time was minimal. Hurricane Michael, however, unleashed floodwaters of biblical proportions on the North Side of campus.
On Thursday, Oct. 11, flash flooding occurred on and around the Maroon Atheletic Quad from around 12:30 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. Braving this unexpected weather oddity to reach their 1:10 midterms, many students had no choice but to trudge
through rapidly flowing flood waters that were thigh deep in some places.
Some students took full advantage of the temporary “Roanoke River” by attempting to swim, float, and even kayak in it. Campus Safety arrived on the scene to discourage students from playing in the murky floodwater, warning students to keep their distance through a loudspeaker.
Though the waters have long since receded, we will not soon forget about this short-lived body of water.
