Those who have chosen not to float like butterflies or fly like the wind, but instead swim like swordfish opened their season up a few weeks ago and have only improved since.
In their opening competition, at Washington and Lee for the ODAC relays, the Men’s team finished second and the Women’s teams finished third. This event also played host to a new school record. The team of Ben Tate Nick McGrath, Cole Hensen, and Brian Grimmett established the new school record in 400 yard freestyle with a time of 3.17.96. The teams would only push forward after this event.
The very next weekend the teams traveled to Greensboro and dominated the competition. The two teams combined to win 25 out of the 26 events on the day and set three new school records along the way. For the Women’s team, Maria Vinson set school records in the 200 yard butterfly, and the 200 yard IM with times of 2.14.76 and 2.16.90. Following her lead, Ben Tate posted a new school record in the 200 yard butterfly, with a time of 2.00.97
Next up the teams hope to continue their hot start as they each swim on this weekend with events in Roanoke and Salem.
