What does your usual college day look like? Do you usually go to classes, lunch, more classes, and then go back to your room? This might work for you, but are we truly enjoying the full college experience? Making connections with people is an integral part of getting an education. Focusing on the present and having an active social life on campus can be beneficial for your mental health; this doesn’t mean that you should go partying every single night, or have a group of thirty friends; but having a few people that you can talk to or share a meal with can make staying in a college dorm away from home much more enjoyable.
Spending time with your peers is important, but equally so is making connections with your professors. Having a good relationship with a professor can open so many doors for you; from small things like obtaining recommendation letters that can be useful when applying for certain scholarships; to getting into internships or more programs provided by the college.
Unfortunately, it can be hard to find a good moment to create a connection with peers or professors. For this, the college provides plenty of opportunities to make connections that will help you not only now but in your future career path. Internship fairs are a fairly common occurrence on campus. To get information about these you may look at the Roanoke College morning emails or the poster boards around campus. Going to an event like this provides the opportunity for you to focus on meeting the right people who will help you grow.
