This weekend, Roanoke College’s Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams went to the VMI Invitational in Lexington, VA. This invitational invited dozens of schools from the area of all sizes, meaning our teams were competing against D-1 and D-2 schools. As a small D-3, the odds were probably stacked against us, but Maroons always persevere. Maroons try, and that’s what matters. In the 60m hurdles, sophomores Olivia Viers and Rebecca Carr were the top two D-3 competitors, and both moved to the semi-finals where they placed 16th and 17th places respectively. These two definitely have good odds for the ODAC indoor tournament happening March 1st and 2nd in our very own Cregger Center.
Continuing our success this weekend, throwers Brianna (Bri) Marando and Claudia Disbrow hit a PR (personal record) at this tournament with 10.34 m and 10m respectively. Matt Garis PR’d in the mile with a time of 4:28.31 and is currently 10th in Roanoke College history. Cody Roupe also had a personal record in the high jump with a 1.95m jump. With the jump this weekend he now holds the 3rd highest jump in school history. He also placed third place in the invitational against D-1 and D-2 athletes. Amari Carter competed in the 200 m sprint and timed 22.66s on the event earning him 6th place in school history as only a freshman! Elias Ammon ran in the 800 m sprint at the VMI Invitational and ran that in 1:58.40 which puts him 7th in school history. He is also a freshman with a start to a phenomenal season. All six of these tremendous athletes had a personal best this past weekend, and three of them are freshmen. The future of Roanoke College’s track and field team is looking bright! The athletes are excited to return to action this weekend here in Sunny Salem. Events will start Friday afternoon and will be hosted in both Bast and Cregger.
