Most of you by now have probably noticed the last remnants of the snowfall from earlier this month slowly melting away into oblivion throughout the week. Though perhaps the timing was a bit less than optimal, considering the date of the student body’s return to campus for the Spring 2025 semester, there was still much joy to be found from the icy wonderland, especially for students who call the DMV area home.
Out of curiosity, I decided to ask some of my peers – fellow Roanoke College students – what their favorite snowy day activities are. I was surprised to learn that most respondents prefer to take a simple walk through the snow and enjoy the serene and scenic landscape, rather than engage directly with the fluffy flakes. A few respondents stated that sledding is their favorite activity. To me, sledding is the first snow activity that comes to mind, so it was slightly jarring to learn that it was not the most common answer! Two people mentioned liking to eat the snow, though neither specified if they meant eating it as-is or making it into a sweet treat like maple candy or snow cream. Only one student listed building forts and snowmen with the snow as her favorite activity, which was perhaps even more surprising than the lack of ‘sledding’ responses.
At this point, you may be wondering what my favorite snowy escapade is. Here’s my answer: staying inside! I do like going out in the snow with my family or friends for a short time and starting on a fort with them, but I get cold and wet and miserable very quickly and head back inside long before my counterparts. I prefer to sit in a cozy chair with a warm, sweet drink and watch the fun outside the window!
Whatever your favorite thing to do in the snow may be, I hope that everyone who experienced snow over the holiday break was able to enjoy it! And for those who didn’t, perhaps it isn’t too late for one more good snow here in Virginia this winter!
