Fall is a great time to be a Maroon. Colorful leaves crown the campus, cooler weather prompts outside study sessions, and the school is ringing with opportunities for entertainment. With many exciting campus events coming up, Roanoke College students have the opportunity to take a break from their coursework and have fun.
The long-anticipated Shushok Shindig is happening November 8th at 5pm, and will be held at the Maroon Athletic Quad (MAQ). After being postponed due to extreme weather, the student body is extremely excited to attend this annually held event. The shindig will have a mechanical bull, where students can show off their endurance skills. In addition, there will also be a cactus planting station and s’mores. The Campus Activities Board (CAB) invites you to show up in your jeans and boots and throw down!
If you are looking for an opportunity to increase your awareness on socioeconomic issues, Sarah Smarsh, an accomplished author and former professor, is speaking November 12th at 7:30pm in the Wortmann Ballroom. She will discuss her novel Heartland – Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth and will most likely touch on her future works. Come for a discussion on the class system and economic issues in the United States.
The Roanoke College History Department is hosting their annual History Homecoming Bash Tuesday, November 19th at 7:30pm. Stop by the Logan Gallery in the Bank Building for a 18th century though 1980’s themed costume contest and a bonfire to celebrate history and the department!
Another opportunity to learn more about the economy will be available November 20th, as Mr. Andy Puzder visits Olin Theater to speak on capitalism and the free market. From 7-8pm, Puzder will lecture on the moral beliefs of capitalism and the opportunities young Americans have in the United States’ economy. As a former CEO, attorney, and commentator, he will have much to offer in his lecture. Pick up a ticket for the event at the Information Desk to secure your seat at the lecture.
As classes wrap up and coursework increases, it is important to take time for yourself to de-stress. Campus activities are an amazing way to do this. They allow you to better feel a part of the Roanoke College community, meet new people, and learn new things. Following the Campus Activities Board and stopping to read posters around campus are useful resources, and could help you unwind as finals approach.
