After three tough, hard-fought games to start off their season, all requiring extra time and all ending in draws, the men’s soccer team was able to capture a 2-0 victory over the Shenandoah Hornets. The Maroons dominated all phases of the game and gave Goalkeeper Zach Behe an easy day, requiring him to only make one save throughout the entirety of the game. The Maroons outshot the Hornets by a significant margin of 11-3 and had 10 corner kicks versus the Hornets’ zero.
While the Maroons had struggled to find the back of the net in previous games, they were able to score solid goals in both halves. Anthony Zarlenga connected with Joe Carman off a corner kick where Carman was able to collect the ball and find the back of the net. The other goal was scored by Dylan Berk off of a penalty kick due to a foul occurring inside the box. Once the Maroons got the lead, there was no sign of them giving it up as they continued to dominate time of possession for the remainder of the game.
The Maroons look to build upon their first win of the season as they take on the Ferrum Panthers this Sunday, March 14th at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons will look to remain undefeated so they can have a better seeding in the ODAC Playoffs, starting next month. Limited fans will be allowed to attend Sunday’s match in Kerr Stadium, but fans can stream the event on the Roanoke Athletics website, www.roanokemaroons.com.
