Roanoke College’s Morehead Award submission deadline is coming up! The essay contest is due March 15 by noon. The Morehead award is an award (including a 200 dollar cash prize) given to a currently enrolled Roanoke College student who composes a 600-800 word essay about how they live John Alfred Morehead’s legacy. Morehead was a former president of the college who left to commit his life to serving others in post-war Europe. He was constantly committed to ideas of service, conviction, and open-mindedness.
Up to three students can win this award, and winners will get a chance to then present their essay at next year’s Convocation ceremony for incoming freshmen in the fall. The essay should be written in the first person and be as specific as possible to the prompt. Each year the prompt is: how have students experienced any of the three aspects of Morehead’s legacy during their time here at Roanoke College. Essays can be serious, funny, lighthearted, or abstract– they just have to reflect the essay’s prompt.
More information on the Morehead award can be found on the school’s website under “The Morehead Award.” Good luck, Maroons! Hopefully we will see you at the Fall 2021 Convocation.
