As Fall begins and the days get colder here on campus, the college traditionally holds a ton of events to celebrate the changing of the seasons. Even with the outbreak of Covid and a portion of the student body at home Roanoke College will still be hosting events to celebrate Halloween and all that comes with it. Be on the lookout for these fun fall-themed events and more as the weeks go by.
On Thursday, October 29 The Department of English and Communications is hosting an online Zoom reading of student work and other scary Halloween-themed readings. More information can be found on the department’s website. The department will also be asking for optional donations to support Second Harvest Food Bank to help others to have a wonderful holiday season.
As of the date of this publication, Roanoke’s very own Chi Omega will be hosting their own Fall Fest on the Back Quad. The fest starts at 5 P.M. and will run till 9 P.M. There will be plenty of things to do there, including the ability to make s’mores and drink apple cider. The Campus Activities Chair, Kaillee Philleo, said, “[a]ll proceeds go towards Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia.” Along with the s’mores, there will also be pumpkin painting and a cornhole tournament. Philleo added, “the Pi Epsilon chapter of Chi Omega helps support and raise money for Make-A-Wish, who works to grant wishes to children with critical illnesses, and locally we help to make these children’s dreams come true.” If you are not able to make the event but still want to donate, please reach out to Kaillee Philleo at kmphilleo@mail.roanoke.edu.
In lieu of Roanoke College’s yearly Halloween Fest, CAB will be hosting a ton of on-campus, in-person, social distancing events. This past week CAB hosted a bonfire with hot apple cider and hot chocolate paired along with a live band, Barren Minds. Starting next week will be CAB’s Halloweek. The events kick off with a shadow play of Rocky Horror Picture Show hosted by the Brackety-Ack! There will also be pumpkin carving if you missed your chance to do it at Chi Omega’s event. Along with that will be some Trick or Treating and axe throwing. Finally, to end the week will be CAB’s Costume Halloween Bingo.
