As a kid, St. Patrick’s Day was one of my favorite holidays. I picked out my green outfit days in advance and drank Shamrock Shakes all month long. Now, I’m old and boring. So I decided to ask my 7-year-old and 10-year-old nieces, Cay and Lexi, what they think about the holiday.
The Brackety-Ack: Why do people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
Lexi: It’s just a fun holiday to celebrate and I think it’s because it brings you luck and stuff. Like, people use it as a day to bring you luck.
BA: How do you feel about Leprechauns?
Cay: They’re fake.
Lexi: Yeah, they’re fake.
BA: Are you sure?
Lexi: Yeah, I’ve never actually met one. Our teachers just set it up.
BA: Why do people wear green on St. Patrick’s Day?
Cay: So you don’t get pinched.
Lexi: So you don’t get pinched and you just wear green for clovers and stuff. So you can have good luck.
BA: What do you eat on St. Patrick’s Day?
Lexi: Don’t we have, like, beef or something like that?
BA: Corned beef and cabbage.
Cay: I love corned beef
Lexi: Yeah, I love corned beef.
Cay: And corn.
BA: Are Lucky Charms a St. Patrick’s Day food?
Lexi: I would count it as one.
Cay: And also our mommy puts green food coloring in our milk.
BA: Have you ever found a four-leaf-clover?
Lexi: Yes, I have and I gave one to Cay and I had one for me. My teacher last year found one and gave it to me.
Cay: I tried finding one but I never do.
Lexi: I think the luck ran out or maybe it died though because I kept it in a bag when I found it.
Cay: Maybe if you get a four-leaf-clover and leave it somewhere, maybe a leprechaun could get it.
BA: I thought you said leprechauns were fake?
Cay: Maybe they’re real.
BA: How will you celebrate the holiday?
Cay: I don’t know.
Lexi: I’ll wear all green so I don’t get pinched. I will maybe start up some mischief. Even though it’s not April Fools Day, I’m just going to start up so mischief and prank some people.
BA: How do you think adults celebrate the holiday?
Cay: I don’t know.
Lexi: By like hanging out together and eating a meal together, stuff like that.
