Let’s face it, Halloween just isn’t what it used to be. I wanted nothing more when I was little to go to school in my costume, go to my elementary school’s Halloween carnival, and trick-or-treat to get more candy than I’ll need in my lifetime. Now that we’re grown up, Halloween has lost its glitter, for me at least. There’s no more excitement for dressing up and getting loads of candy from neighbors and friends. I envy all the kids that will be out dressed as their favorite characters, anticipating the forthcoming sugar high. Now that we’re “adults” it would be looked down upon if we tried to go trick-or-treating, but I still think there’s no reason to not get into the Halloween spirit. With all that, I’ve come up with four ways that will get anyone in the Halloween spirit this season: decorations, movies, haunted houses, and spooky looks.
Decorations. I know we are all broke college students, but we all know about that first section in Target where they have loads of cute décor for under 5 bucks. Grab some cobwebs, a few jack-o-lanterns and don’t forget the door décor so everyone on your hall knows you are excited for the season. Having a ~spooky~ room will not only look awesome, but it will also get everyone that enters in the Halloween spirit.
Now that your room is spooky, it’s time to really feel spooky with Halloween movies. Netflix, Hulu, and so many other streaming sites are full of some of the best Halloween movies ever made. Pulling up one of your favorite movies, or one you’ve never seen, snuggling down in your bed, and getting wrapped up in the greatness on the screen is a great way to get into the Halloween season. Gather all your friends up (or your boo), and it could be a cool way to turn a boring night in into an eerily good night.
Now that you got your mind on edge from a scary movie, it’s time to get in on the action- Haunted houses. There are many great haunted houses in the area like the Gallows, St. Albans and Terror Manor that are a definite way to have you scared straight. Grabbing a group of friends and screaming your way through a haunted house makes for a great memory during Halloween and could even turn out to be a tradition.
I know that not many people are going to want to dress up and go to class; however there are other more subtle ways to show off your Halloween spirit. Spooky socks, cute Halloween jewelry, and even a spiderweb-wing-eyeliner look are great ways to express your Halloween spirit. They are out there just enough to let everyone know that you’re in on the Halloween fun without going overboard with it, if that isn’t something you’re into.
With all these spooky ways to get into the spirit of Halloween, I have no doubt that this season will be a success! Whether it be with a frighteningly decked-out room or the perfect combo of pumpkin socks and Birks, have fun these next couple of weeks and get back into the daunting holiday mood; your inner child will definitely thank you.
