The third round of Democratic debates took place Thursday, September 12th and if you didn’t watch it, you weren’t missing much. A large portion of the time candidates spoke on issues which have been discussed at great lengths while also taking jabs at President Trump.

Within the first five minutes Trump slander began when Senator Kamala Harris spoke openly to the President. In fact, Harris mentioned Trump 11 times. One of the themes for the night seemed to be a Trump dump. It happens to be common knowledge that democrats aren’t huge fans of the current President, so it is kind of confusing why the candidate’s distaste for Trump would be brought up 35 times. As I watched the debate, every time one of the candidates mentioned Trump, I got a little more annoyed and it honestly consumed my thoughts on how the debate went. The debaters are wasting voter’s time by talking about this topic which almost all democrats can agree on. When voting in the primaries this February I want to make sure I get an informed view of all the candidates, and the last factor I want to be taking into consideration is the amount each candidate dislikes Trump.

What I really want to hear on the debate stage is how they plan on running a democratic White House with a Republican majority in Congress, or how they plan on compromising with the other party. Additionally, ideas on health care have been done to death. We all know Bernie and Warren support “Medicare-for-all” and Biden wants to strengthen Obamacare. During the entire debate, about 20 minutes was spent on healthcare completely dominating all other topics. On the other hand, only five minutes were spent on the climate.

This is a topic in which I am interested in seeing how each candidate differs. Climate change is something many voters are concerned about and we need to stay informed about what our leaders are thinking. The fact that only four candidates out of ten spoke on this topic is disheartening. There could have been more discussion on topics which haven’t been given as much attention. Maybe in the next debate I will be more satisfied, but for now I feel the debate was a complete letdown.
