You can be a Commons Chef

Written by Kevin Vitkus

As classes pick up, we have come to the point where Commons becomes overcrowded with students waiting in seemingly never-ending lines for the meal of the day. For some, Chef Matt’s creations are well worth the wait; for others, not so much. If you are like me and find that you don’t want to wait half an hour for grilled chicken, then you shouldn’t. With the variety of options Commons has you don’t have to settle on what is pre-made for you. There are plenty of ways for you to embrace your inner chef while in Commons.

Let’s begin with a simple quesadilla. The Commons quesadilla is a known hack to some but will still shock a senior.

  1. Go to the deli bar. Grab a tortilla from up top.
  2. Next you head over to the salad bar. Put some of that nice shredded cheddar on there.
  3. Now here is where you can get creative, depending on what you see at the salad line, the sandwich bar, whatever is available that day you can add to the quesadilla.

(Personally, I like to take the steak from the salad bar and put a few strips on top of the cheese.)

4. Next the condiments. You can put any sauce you want. I like to drizzle a bit of ranch on top and some siracha—an attempt to imitate the Taco Bell jalapeno ranch sauce.

5. Fold the tortilla in half and pinch it around the edges and hope that all the filling stays inside. (I press it flat with my hand to get it as flat as possible)

6. The final step is taking it over to the panini press. Throw it on the grill and then press it again, making sure not to spill the ingredients onto the grill. Give it a solid 3-4 minutes on the first side, flip it over, and give it another 2 minutes and give it a final press.

7. Grab some dipping sauce and enjoy. You just became a Commons Chef.
