Last weekend, the RC Dance Team traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC to compete in the Hollywood Vibe dance competition. Dance schools from everywhere along the East Coast were present, setting high stakes and an aggressive journey to the top.
After two long semesters of training, RCDT felt confident in their performance and ability, which was certainly evident to the judges. The dance team placed first in their division and received highest overall score. “Not only was it a time to grow, but it also offered a chance to highlight our hard work and skill as a team,” said senior captain Kimberlie Willard.
Before and after the competition, RCDT and other contestants participated in a seven-hour convention of instructional dance classes ranging in category, taught by renowned professional dancers.
Former ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ competitor Caitlin Kinney taught ballet/lyrical and Joey Pizzi, choreographer of Mary Poppins Returns, Chicago, Hairspray and Burlesque, taught musical theatre.
“Learning from all of the professional choreographers with my team is a memory I will always treasure. More than anything, I appreciate that we got to grow individually as dancers and as a team,” said freshman Shaela Acevedo.
The dance team will perform once more during Alumni Weekend and then take a short break over the summer before starting back up again next September.
