Theatre RC Takes on the Regional Festival

Written by Charissa Roberson

A representative of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) attended Theatre RC’s fall production of “Our Town” on Nov. 17, 2018. The play and its participants received several nominations, including Directing for Dr. Lisa Warren, Scenic Design for Rob Bessolo, Costume Design for Jennie Ruhland, and Stage Management for Emma Daisey.

In addition, sophomore Adeline Huggins and freshman Sarah Jane Ruppert were nominated for the prestigious Irene Ryan acting scholarship.  From Feb. 5-9, these two actresses and several other members of Theatre RC will attend the KCACTF in Spartanburg, SC, accompanied by Dr. Nelson Barre, assistant professor of Fine Arts at Roanoke College.

Over the course of the week, the Irene Ryan nominees will compete to progress through several rounds of performances—including a monologue and selected scenes—after which winners will be chosen to move on to the National Festival.

No matter what the outcome, however, attending the festival is itself an honor and an educational experience.  These RC students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, attend plays and practice their craft, alongside other college students from across the region.

“It’s the first time that Roanoke College has ever done this,”  Huggins said, who is also competing in the Dramaturgy category. “I think it’s going to be a really cool opportunity for us to go and experience that and to come back and kind of share it with everybody else.”

From Olin Hall to Spartanburg, these young actresses are taking their talents to the next level as they represent RC this week in South Carolina.
